Carat

This is the easiest of the 4Cs to explain! Carat is a unit of weight. One carat is equal to 0.20gramme, so one gramme is equal to 5 carats. There are also 100 points in a carat, so 50 points, for example, is half a carat.

Carat weight is also referred to in "grains". There are 4 grains to one carat (each grain being 25 points) so 3 grains (or a 3 grainer) weighs 0.75 carats or three quarters of a carat.
